The Spark ("Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.")
quote
"Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself." Rumi
The wisdom captured in Rumi's words illustrates the transformative journey from a general ambition centered around the desire to change things outside of our control; to the profound realization that it is oneself what we have full control of. Focusing relentlessly on what’s under one’s control is the real path forward.
Meaningful change must take place within
Also, let’s reflect on another common pitfall, often times things we openly criticize in the outside world, are indeed things that we have not yet mastered ourselves. We walk with tight blinders believing our peripheral vision is wide.
The words by Rumi call on each one of us to be role models of what we want to see happen in the world before we point out at external factors.
From a leadership insights perspective I find these words as reminders of three points any good leader needs to master:
the ability to shift perspectives, to reframe. Think clearly
the discipline to look in the mirror more than through the window. Be Self-aware
the courage of ownership. Own what you have to own.
“Lead yourself, Learn to live. Lead others, Learn to Build.”
