"The Work is the Win"

Welcome to this week's edition of “Sebastian’s Leadership Reflections.”
Today, we embark on yet another transformative journey of self-discovery to explore the profound concept of "Autotelic" leadership and its relationship with what it means to operate in a “state of flow”.
Autotelic derives from the Greek words "auto" (self) and "telos" (end, purpose).
Autotelic leadership represents a unique and powerful mindset that places intrinsic motivation, passion for the process, and a relentless pursuit of excellence at its core.
At the heart of Autotelic leadership lies the art of finding joy and fulfillment in the very act of leading pursuing positive impact, rather than being solely driven by outcomes and rewards. Autotelic leaders are those that deeply embrace the journey, immerse in the process, and experience a state of "flow" where they are fully absorbed making them perform at their peak. This mindset transcends the traditional paradigm of leadership, as Autotelic leaders are not just focused on results, but find genuine purpose and satisfaction in the journey itself.
Think of the transformative impact that Autotelic leadership can have on organizational performance. Autotelic leaders inspire and motivate their teams by fostering a culture of intrinsic motivation, by coaching them to understand that the true driver of everything comes within.
By empowering individuals to align their passions with their work, Autotelic leaders are able to create a profound sense of purpose and shape ways of working that invariably drive sustained high performance. What sets autotelic leaders apart is that these leaders possess a profound sense of purpose that goes beyond short-term gains and is not affected by short term setbacks; they strive to make a lasting impact by getting better every day, by mastering their craft.
Autotelic leaders are convinced that great results will invariable follow, this is why what they obsess with is the process and the joy of doing the work.
Easier said than done, right? Probably yes if you try to fake it, otherwise it naturally flows…
FLOW
It is not possible to properly understand what it takes to be an “autotelic leader” without talking about what it means to reach a “state of flow.”
A flow state is a unique and captivating experience that has been the central focus of positive-psychology research since the development of the concept by Hungarian-American psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in the 1970s.
The “flow” can be observed in the course of any activity, but it is most commonly experienced when a task has clear and well-defined goals and it’s aligned with the individual's skill level.
One of the most intriguing aspects of flow states is their transformative effect on seemingly mundane tasks. FLOW STATES turn ordinary practices into AUTOTELIC activities—ones that are enjoyed for their own sake, rather than merely acting as means to an end for external reward. This realization prompts an important question: how can we leverage this state of flow to our advantage? How can we induce flow when engaging in activities we wish to master, helping us find enjoyment in both the process of skill improvement and the eventual rewards that mastery brings?
Csikszentmihalyi suggested that those who readily enter into flow states possess what he called an "autotelic personality"—a disposition to actively seek out challenges and immerse themselves with intense focus. Where individuals without such a personality perceive difficulties, autotelic individuals view opportunities to develop their skills further. Autotelic personalities exhibit receptiveness and openness to new challenges, demonstrating persistence and low levels of self-centeredness. The true competitive advantage they have for the personal growth and career success is the ability to focus on tasks rather than being motivated by the rewards, allowing them this way to hone in their innate abilities compared to others.
This Matrix shows the relationship between level of challenge with level of skills.
By understanding the factors that contribute to reaching a flow state, cultivating an autotelic personality and embracing challenges with a growth mindset, leaders can excel in their pursuits by deriving genuine pleasure from the endless journey of skill improvement. Flow states transform routine activities into deeply fulfilling experiences.
Flow states serve as THE pathway to unlocking our fullest potential as masters of our chosen crafts.
Being in a state of flow feels like the attention is focused on a limited stimulus field with full concentration and complete involvement. It’s an all-in state of being and doing.
